Teenage brain analysis sweeps the board at prestigious research awards ceremonyDate: 27 October 2005 A new approach to analysing the contents of the teen brain and a young researcher’s call for an industry makeover were top performers at last Tuesday night’s prestigious Research Excellence and Effectiveness Awards, hosted by the MRS at London’s Park Lane Hotel. The insightful and entertaining paper entitled ‘The Teen Brain: What’s Going on in There?’ was first presented by Opera Research director Martyn Richards at the Research 2005 conference last March, and scooped awards for Best Paper, sponsored by KD Consulting and Best Presented Paper, sponsored by Discovery Research, at the awards ceremony, presented by ITV news presenter Lucy Alexander. For the first time this year, the winners of these highly coveted MRS conference awards were announced as part of the annual awards ceremony – providing a gripping new element to the usual line-up. Alongside Martyn Richards’ conference accolades, a new star was born in the form of young researcher Luke Perry, whose involvement in key industry events of the past year earned him conference awards for Best Newcomer, sponsored by the New Fieldwork Company, Best Contribution to Conference, sponsored by Price Jamieson, and the newly introduced Research magazine’s Personality of the Year award. Luke, of RSM Robson Rhodes, was noted for his enthralling chairing of the ‘Agenda for the Next Generation’ session at Research 2005, which involved a critical assessment of the industry’s attitude towards attracting and retaining ‘talent’. Praised by the judges as ‘one of the most relevant, passionate, eloquent and practically-minded calls for an industry makeover ever’, his three successive trips to the stage proved that the research industry continues to develop through the injection of fresh new talent. The prestigious awards ceremony comprised a 400-strong audience of the cream of the research, marketing and communications industries. The winners of the other Research 2005 conference awards, Research magazine awards and the annual MRS Research Excellence and Effectiveness Awards were:
An MRS Silver Medal for the best paper published in the International Journal of Market Research during 2004 was also awarded to Ben Page at MORI. Chairman of the MRS, Eamonn Santry, commented, “This year’s annual awards ceremony was an event to remember. With the introduction of the new Research magazine awards and the culmination of seven months’ build-up to the Research 2005 conference awards winner announcements, it was an exciting and highly-charged evening. The breadth and scope of the winning entries prove that the research industry is constantly evolving and innovating, developing new concepts, techniques and strategies that produce ever more accurate and insightful results for clients. “Competition for each of the awards was more intense than ever before – illustrated by the many finalists we had in several categories. It was a tough decision for the judges and our congratulations go to all those shortlisted for that great achievement. However, the ultimate winners really had something that made them stand out from the rest; it will be interesting to watch them go on to inspire and motivate the industry in the months and years to come.” Full information on the Research Excellence and Effectiveness Awards can be found on the MRS website at www.mrs.org.uk/awards/2005/evening.
