Tony Cowling awarded MRS Gold Medal: recognition of lifetime achievement and contribution to market research

Date: 24 January 2006

24 January 2005, London, UK. Tony Cowling, Former Chairman of Taylor Nelson Sofres plc and President of Gallup International, has been awarded the MRS Gold Medal to celebrate his outstanding lifetime achievement and contribution to market research. Cowling received the award in recognition of over 40 years service to the industry, during which time he contributed not only to its development and integrity, but also to the wider UK economy and business.

Under his leadership, Taylor Nelson Sofres has become the leading market research company in the UK, and the second largest in the world in terms of turnover and employment. Whilst Tony Cowling was Chief Executive, TNS established or acquired subsidiaries in approximately 50 countries, rising to 70 countries under his Chairmanship. The business now has a turnover around £1 billion per annum.

Tony Cowling’s career has spanned five decades, during which time he has helped to define and raise the professional standards and integrity of market research. For many years he was an active member of the MRS Professional Standards Committee, helping to upgrade the Code of Conduct and guidelines on best practice.

During the 1970’s, Cowling was instrumental in helping build the Association of Market Survey Organisations (AMSO). Since then, he has spent considerable time representing market research to both Government and other marketing sectors. He was particularly influential in relation to the first UK legislation on data protection in 1984.

More recently, Tony Cowling has devoted a considerable amount of time and energy to building the ‘Voice of the People’ project around the world. This project conducted by Gallup International Association (GIA), of which he is now President, regularly collects information on a worldwide basis (typically 60+ countries) on major world issues such as poverty, democracy, corruption, health, the environment and human rights. Over the past few years he has devoted increasing amounts of his time to working with Gallup International Association and the World Economic Forum (WEF) on pro bono projects, to make world leaders increasingly aware of the views of the people of the world on such issues.

David Barr, Director General, MRS said: “The MRS Gold Medal is an exceptional and rarely-awarded distinction. Tony Cowling has exercised major influence over many years on both the professional and commercial development of market research. He is an outstanding ambassador for market research, generating a wider understanding of the benefits of skilled research, and of its value and resilience as a commercial enterprise”.

The announcement of the award to Tony Cowling was made at the Taylor Nelson Sofres global management conference on the 23rd January. The Gold Medal will be presented at the MRS awards ceremony, which will take place in Autumn 2006.
