Challenged by researching disabled people?
MRS announces new training course

Date: 17 September 2007

The Market Research Society (MRS) is bringing the issues associated with disability research to the forefront of the sector’s consciousness through a new training course designed to enable research practitioners to gain a better understanding of the challenges posed by this expanding market.

The 2005 Disability Discrimination Act changed the way in which public and private sector organisations approach the disabled community, prompting better understanding and integration at all levels of business. In its role as a provider of insight to all types of organisations, market research has also needed to adapt to respond to the needs of this group and understand how best to research disabled people across the UK.

The MRS course on Researching Disabled People is taking place on 4 October 2007 and will be chaired by Synovate Director and MRS member, Anjul Sharma.

“The course will benefit agency and client-side researchers from both the commercial and social sectors who wish to broaden their understanding of this important area of society and research. It will be particularly relevant to those practitioners who have a statutory responsibility to accommodate the needs of disabled people,” says Anjul.

Those attending can expect a discussion of the critical contextual issues affecting disability research - such as legislative requirements and the appropriate terminology to use - as well as the most relevant research considerations from an agency and client perspective, including the key policies and practices needed to research these communities effectively.

Debrah Harding, Deputy Director General, MRS, underlines the importance of course:
“MRS sets out to provide crucial training and support to equip our members to deliver ever better standards of research. With our ageing population and a rising number of disabled people, this sector is more influential than ever, and researchers must have the necessary knowledge and skills to to accommodate the needs of these communities, ensuring that policies, procedures and practices are within the bounds of the law.”

Researching Disabled People will be held on Thursday 4 October 2007 at the MRS Training Suite in Northburgh Street, London EC1. For more information or to book a place, please contact Robin Nash on 020 7566 1872 or e-mail robin.nash@mrs.org.uk.
