The Census and Geodemographics Group, CGG (formed in 1989 as the Census Interest Group) is part of MRS, but has established itself as a leading independent voice in the geodemographics industry. It aims to:

  • Promote the full use of Census and geodemographic information.
  • Work with the organisations that produce the data e.g. the Office for National Statistics (ONS), representing the needs of the market research industry.

Promoting the use of Census and geodemographic data

The CGG runs regular seminars on the latest developments and uses of Census, geodemographic and lifestyle data, and data integration in market research and related fields. They also publish a number of useful resources including the Geodemographic Knowledge Base website and dedicated Census page. In association with the Office for National Statistics, the CGG have produced a guide to using 2001 Census data in both the commercial and public sectors: A Guide to the 2001 Census: Essential Information for Gaining Business Advantage.

Representing the market research industry

The CGG has an excellent working relationship with ONS Census Division, CGG representatives attend the Census Business Advisory Group.

Working towards the 2011 Census, ONS are consulting with stakeholders and users on each element of the census package - from question topics through to output requirements. The CGG is working on behalf of the market research industry in publicising and responding to these consultations.

Members also took part in various ONS working parties on the 2001 Census Development Programme, so helping to mould the 2001 Census to best satisfy market research industry needs. In particular members of the Group developed a Census-based approximation to the standard market research industry social grade classification (ABC1), so enabling social grade to be gathered from Census data for the first time.

In February 2005, CGG in association with the Association of Census Distributors submitted a report to the ONS, A User's View of the Census.
