Nick Palmer
Nick studied zoology at London University, followed
by three years of teaching at an inner-London comprehensive school.
He joined Barclays Bank in 1966, eventually retiring from that bank
in 2000. After gaining Chartered Institute of Bankers professional
qualifications he rapidly pursued an enriching and varied banking
career, which included the establishment and management of the first
formal market research department in any UK bank.
This led to a three year period in the Directors' /Chairman's
Office dealing with a variety of special projects, followed by the
remainder of his career in senior management in the corporate bank.
Much of this time was spent on directing major business-change projects
in the UK and Europe including the introduction and establishment
of the euro, as well as regulatory matters involving the Central Banks
and the European Commission.
Throughout this time Nick retained a strong interest
in and involvement with various facets of market research and is a
long-serving member of the Market Research Standards Board. Since
leaving Barclays he has become closely involved with a range of Professional
Development activities in MRS, and has pursued several other interests,
including serving as a Board Director for one of the London concert
halls as well as for one of the orchestras, and as a business advisor
to a national charity which is concerned with the homeless. Nick is
a Fellow of MRS.
