Teresa WilliamsTeresa Williams joined the Senior Civil Service in 2007 when she became Head of the Government Social Research Unit at the Treasury. The Unit supports the Chief Government Social Scientist in providing leadership and support to the 1,000+ members of the Government Social Research service and more generally promoting greater use of analysis in policy making and delivery. After completing her first degree in social anthropology at the University of Cambridge in 1990, Teresa joined the quantitative research department at Social & Community Planning Research (now the National Centre for Social Research). After a couple of years learning the tools of the trade in designing and undertaking social surveys and other research projects (mainly for government clients), she joined the Government Social Research service as a Senior Research Officer in the then Department of the Environment. During this period she was actively involved in the Social Research Association as Chair of their Events committee, and then as a member of the Executive Committee. Teresa has now clocked up more than 15 years in the Government Social Research service, during which she has developed and led programmes of research in 5 different government departments, whose current incarnations are: Department for Communities and Local Government, Home Office (twice), Department for Work and Pensions, Cabinet Office and HM Treasury. Early in her government career she achieved a distinction in her part-time MSc in Social Research Methods & Statistics at City University.
